Benefits of Rebuilding Management
What Rebuilding Management Does for the Volunteer Coordinator

Volunteers are the lifeblood of long-term recovery organizations, so it’s important to use those resources wisely. Your management team’s volunteer coordinator oversees the efforts of your volunteers and provides training to ensure their satisfactory performance. The volunteer coordinator is in the field daily, working with his corps of volunteers.

During the clean-up phase, volunteer labor speeds up the recovery process and saves homeowners money. No skills required. During the construction phase, however, your volunteer coordinator must carefully assess the skills of his volunteers to determine the most cost-effective use of their time and energy.

With Rebuilding Management’s competitive-bid component, your volunteer coordinator can determine how best to use his corps of volunteers. For example, by using the bid-submissions compiled by Rebuilding Management, the volunteer coordinator can determine whether it’s more cost-effective for volunteers to paint the interior of Project #1 while contractors hang sheetrock in Project #2, or vice versa.

Construction schedule identifies tasks to be performed by a corps of volunteers.

The volunteer-coordinator position is optional, but highly recommended. If your organization chooses not to use a volunteer coordinator, the oversight of your volunteers becomes the responsibility of the homeowner construction representative . This arrangement is workable if your volunteers are highly skilled and require little or no supervision. But, if your volunteers are unskilled, then the additional responsibility of overseeing their efforts severely reduces the effectiveness of your homeowner construction representative. Which, in turn, reduces the number of projects he can oversee.

It is important to keep in mind both the objective of your organization—to swiftly rebuild communities—as well as the skill level of your volunteers. Are the two in sync? Undoubtedly, a skilled volunteer labor force can speed the recovery process along and save money. But an unskilled labor force can slow down the process and create more waste.

By keeping a volunteer coordinator on your team and by using Rebuilding Management to determine the most cost-effective use of your volunteers’ time and energy, your organization can maintain its objective to swiftly rebuild communities.
